This is a great "luggage" backpack that also doubles as a duffle bag (or you could say that vice versa). I work out five days a week early in the morning before work and have this packed the night before so all I have to do is carry it out to the car. In the main compartment it contains all of the following: dress shoes in a shoe bag, shaving kit, Eagle Creek Pack-It System (containing: slacks, shirt, tie), underpants, socks, belt, day planner, brief of important papers, shower towel, work-out towel. In the side interior zippered netted pocket in contains: shampoo, conditioner, pre-shave oil, scalp conditioner. In the interior zippered netted pocket on the opening panel: two rubber exercise bands and a stretch strap. In the exterior zippered pocket on the opening panel: portable rain jacket, cords, phone charger, soft pouch containing medicines, creams, earbuds, etc. In the exterior zippered pocket on the top vertical end (if you stand it up long ways): set of keys (hanging from built-in ribbon with plastic clip), eye glasses case, sun glasses case, cell phone, wallet, work badge, gym locker lock, etc.

So, as you can see, it holds everything that a large duffle or weekend suitcase can, but I have to walk five blocks each way, and my old duffle bag was really slowing me down and limiting what I could carry in my hands. Even though I am plenty strong enough to carry my large, leather weekender bag, it was creating a lot of tension in my upper trap from trying to lean the other way to balance all the weight of the duffle in my carrying hand. The Porter has hidden shoulder straps that come out of the back panel and turns a duffle/weekender bag into a back pack - very cool. Now the load is evenly distributed and I can walk upright with good posture and have two free hands for coffee or an umbrella. After my workout, shower, shave, and get dressed for work, the wardrobe is reversed and I easily walk four more blocks to work with the weight evenly distributed on my back. Want to use it as a weekend getaway bag? Just unsnap the shoulder straps and tuck them pack into the bottom/back panel and zipper it up and use the compression straps (another bene: fits within international carry-on size as well). The other cool feature are the two compression straps that are not only adjustable, but have two positions to latch them into; one for regular to large load compression, the other set for small loads that will allow super-compression. This unit also has two, very nicely padded and thick handles; one on the side for duffle/weekend bag styled carrying, and one on the top for vertical carrying. In addition, there are two ribbon handles positioned top and bottom for picking it up and laying it flat to pack/unpack or to pick up and help position somewhere like your trunk or airport shuttle. This is the only backpack I've found large enough to carry all my wardrobe and toiletries and still be easily accessible like a suitcase or weekender; all other backpacks consist of a set of smaller pouches or are top loading where you have to dig to find things that are buried at the bottom. The Porter allows its suitcase like access to everything because of the large area of the opening panel that is hinged on just one side - very nice and practical. The only complaint I have is that it lacks a small outer pocket that would allow you to store a cell phone, iPod, wallet, keys, passport, airline ticket, etc. Yes, it does have that top pocket I mentioned where I store my phone, glass cases, and cell, but it is large and you have to dig around and things can get scratched and buttons pressed because it's on the large size for a pocket and has a baggy, single layer bottom that sinks with the weight of its contents.

So, if I love this thing so much, why only 4 stars??? Well, Osprey has hit upon a pet peeve of mine... I think it really stinks when companies put out a good product for a few years, then decide to reduce or take away some of the features, and yet, keep the price the same! I purposely bought the 2011 model (sorry, I got the last one from Zappo's August 2012) because it is superior to the cheapened version Osprey released for 2012. Mainly, on the 2011 shoulder straps, there is a pair of plastic male tension snaps that connect to the female snaps that are sewn into the top of the back panel for extra reinforcement in addition to the straps being sewn into the back panel. You can adjust these snaps to bring the unit up higher on your back (putting more tension on them and relieving more off of the regular sewn part) which is a good thing because the shoulder straps have two points of connection to the backpack to distribute the stress. The 2011 model also has a large zippered outer compartment on the opening panel. These two key features are now gone on the 2012 model! (Also, I can't remember which one, but one of the interior netted pockets has also been removed from the 2012 model). And yet, they kept the price the same - so less features and a weaker shoulder strap system, yet no reduction in price for taking these things away - nice one Osprey!

And if you're reading Osprey, don't come back with, "Oh, we "had" to reduce the features so we wouldn't have to "raise" the price of the 2012 model." Sorry, as consumers we all know that translates to, "We're a greedy corporation and we aren't willing to reduce our profit margin..." It would be one thing if these were made here in America - I would gladly fork over 2011's price for 2012's lesser product, but these are still being churned out by the thousands in Chinese textile labor plants. So, to potential buyers, see if you can scour out a 2011 or earlier model on the web; if they don't say what year it is, look for pictures and see if the shoulder straps have plastic snaps at the top (that's your clue). All in all, if you can't find the superior 2011 and earlier model, I still recommend the Porter series as it's the only backpack I've found that gives the large single compartment and easy access like a suitcase or weekender. Osprey, please either drop your price or bring back the features from 2011, or, even better, bring back your manufacturing plants to America!
